The Human Disease, Diagnosis and Treatment (HDDT) Collaborative ResePetri-dish'sarch Network (CRN) is by definition a very broad concept; this CRN therefore harnesses relevant expertise and excellence from many Schools across the University of Birmingham (UoB), including, but not limited to, Medicine, Biosciences, Sport and Exercise Science, Computer Science, Physics, Law, Engineering and Psychology.  It is also envisaged that many of the other CRNs, including Genes Cells and Organisms, Human Well-being and Development, Structural Biology and Imaging, will closely interrelate, enhancing both their own and HDDT activities.

The HDDT CRN focus emanates from key areas of international expertise within the host School, the School of Medicine, but with vital collaboration and complementary working across the University and beyond; in academia, industry and the health sector.  Established areas of research expertise and centres of excellence in the CRN include:

  • Cancer
  • Immunity and infection
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Neurodegenerative Diseases
  • Liver disease
  • Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases
  • Public Health and Epidemiology
  • Primary Care

The research encompassed by the HDDT CRN has a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary approaches, combining basic and clinical scientists in state of the art facilities and stimulating environments, working together to find cures and treatments for major diseases.

The environment of the country’s second city with a large (£5.5M) thriving, ethnically and economically diverse population, coupled with the relevant excellence and expertise within HDDT place the University in a pivotal position with regard to innovation in the biomedical sciences field. As such, UoB has made a long term commitment to clinical and translational research.
